According to the results of the Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA) travel market trend survey for September (July-September), the domestic travel economic activity index (DI) was minus 10, down 7 points from the previous period (April-June). Overseas travel rose 5 points to minus 3, finally reversing its long-standing relationship of domestic travel at the top. Domestic travel was heavily affected by the successive natural disasters and was sluggish despite it being the summer vacation period. All business types continued to show negative figures, but in-house travel fared well, rising 3 points to 9. By area, the heavy rain disaster caused a strong sense of recession, with Sanyo and Sanin falling 18 points to minus 39 and Shikoku falling 12 points to minus 36. Perhaps due to the earthquake, the Keihanshin region also fell 9 points to 0. On the other hand, Koshinetsu rose 9 points to minus 14, suggesting that the popularity of summer resorts has increased due to the intense heat. Group travel was generally stagnant, while individual travel struggled due to the direct impact of natural disasters. Travel agencies have voiced opinions such as "The number of customers sent to the affected areas has dropped sharply due to the heavy rain disaster in Western Japan," "Families and individuals are struggling," and "Amakusa and Nagasaki are doing well due to the World Heritage registration." The domestic DI for the next period (October-December) is expected to recover slightly, rising 10 points to 0. Meanwhile, overseas travel will continue to perform well. By business type, all business types except for Retailer 2, which was minus 25, are positive. By destination, Korea, Asia, China, and Micronesia are notable for their strong performance. However, the DI for the next period is expected to fall 7 points to minus 10. Travel to Japan has fallen 3 points to 1. By destination, Hokkaido and northern Kanto have increased, but Kinki, Sanyo, Sanin, Shikoku, Koshinetsu, Hokuriku, and Kyushu have performed poorly with double-digit declines. The DI for the next period is expected to rise 4 points to 5. The survey is conducted quarterly. 293 companies, including JATA members, responded.
