The breakfast submitted by Gifu Miyako Hotel (Gifu Prefecture) was selected as the winner of Rakuten Travel's "Breakfast Festival 2018." The festival, now in its ninth year, aims to determine the "most delicious breakfast at a lodging facility in Japan" from among the accommodations registered with Rakuten Travel. Approximately 1,300 entries were submitted from across the country, and six facilities advanced to the final stage after general user voting, word-of-mouth reviews, and tastings by general judges. The competition was held at Hattori Nutrition College in Shibuya Ward, Tokyo on November 28th, and the final ranking was decided after judging by famous chefs such as Toshiro Kandagawa, Tsutomu Ochiai, and Chinami Hamauchi. The winning breakfast from Gifu Miyako Hotel was "Ayu rice porridge - garnished with fragrant sweetfish chips" and "Okumino old local chicken grilled with hoba miso." It is a local dish made with local ingredients, and was highly praised, with comments such as "The soup stock is gentle, so even people who don't like sweetfish can enjoy it" (Ochiai) and "The sweetfish porridge has a lot of depth, making it a rare dish" (Hamanai). The runner-up was Hotel Kinoza (Mie Prefecture) with their "Seasonal ingredients from Mie! Steamed local chicken ranran (egg)" and "Local soup with fresh vegetables caught that morning and fresh fish in season boiled in salt". Third place went to Shirahone's famous hot spring Awanoyu (Nagano Prefecture), fourth place to Kokuminshukusha Senjoen (Shimane Prefecture), fifth place to Resort Hotel Olivean Shodoshima (Kagawa Prefecture), and sixth place to Hotel Epinard Nasu (Tochigi Prefecture).
