According to a report by the Japan Tourism Agency, total sales from major travel agencies in May increased 1.9% compared to the same month last year to 480,425 million yen. Domestic travel was down 0.9% to 292,399 million yen. Sales to all destinations were lower due to the Golden Week being one day shorter than last year's. Overseas travel increased 6.2% to 165,754 million yen. Nearby Asian destinations, including Korea, were popular. Travel by foreigners increased 7.8% to 22,272 million yen. Individual travel was strong. 24 out of 50 companies increased their sales compared to the same month last year.
