On April 4, JTB announced its outlook for travel trends for people going on trips of one night or more during Golden Week (April 25-May 5). The total number of travelers during Golden Week is estimated to be 23.32 million, 101.8% of the previous year, and total travel expenditure is estimated to be 9630 billion yen, 111.2% of the previous year. For domestic travel, the number of travelers is 22.8 million, 100.9% of the previous year. The average cost of domestic travel is 36,100 yen, 103.7% of the previous year, and total domestic travel expenditure is expected to be 823.1 billion yen, 104.7% of the previous year. The peak departure dates are April 27 and May 3, with two peaks: a three-day holiday in the first half and a four-day holiday in the second half. The most common number of days is one night and two days, at 37.7%, but this is down 1.2 points from the previous year. The number of people who went for two nights and three days (33.9%) and three nights and four days (17.1%) increased. In terms of travel destinations, Kanto 20.1%, Kinki 16.7%, and Tokai 12.8% were the top three. In terms of transportation, private cars 55.3%, JR Shinkansen 23.8%, and JR conventional lines and private railways 19.7% followed. While private cars and rental cars decreased, railways increased by 2.2 points and airplanes increased by 3.1 points. Hotels 60.8% and inns 26.3% were the top three. JTB's products are doing well in Tokyo, including TDL, and Kansai, including Universal Studios Japan, and airplane products to Okinawa and Kyushu are also growing. For overseas travel, the number of travelers was 520,000, 167.7% compared to the previous year, and the average expense was 269,000 yen. Excluding 2019, which had a 10-day holiday, it is expected to recover to about 80-90% of the pre-COVID levels. Destinations, in order from top to bottom, were South Korea, Southeast Asia, and Taiwan. JTB analyzed that "desire to travel is high, but due to the rising cost of travel, many people are going to nearby destinations, and Asian destinations are especially popular." The survey was estimated based on various economic trends, consumer behavior surveys, transport and tourism related data, and a questionnaire survey (targeting 2,600 people) conducted by the JTB Group.
