On August 1, JTB (President Eijiro Yamakita) announced that it will start an "area development project" in Shodoshima, Kagawa Prefecture, aiming to improve the perceived value of the island as a tourist destination and promote sustainable development in cooperation with local governments, companies, and other local businesses. The first step is to expand the bicycle sharing business. The number of bicycle stations on the island will be increased to improve convenience for visitors and promote travel around the island. This time, it was determined that Shodoshima is the best starting point for creating a sustainable tourist destination, given the abundance of tourist spots, SDGs efforts, and current issues. With the aim of creating a sustainable industry based on tourism, the "Project to Create Shodoshima 20 Years from Now" was launched, and the project aims to revitalize Shodoshima through working with two towns on Shodoshima and participating in the Shodoshima-Setouchi Area Management Association. The first project, the bicycle sharing business, will allow people to freely rent and borrow electric-assisted bicycles at bicycle parking spaces on the island using an app. 160 state-of-the-art vehicles equipped with IoT for bicycle sharing will be introduced, and the number of stations on the island will be expanded to 42. Going forward, they plan to conduct demonstrations of self-driving buses in September and autonomous unmanned boats using AI in November. Also in November, they plan to develop a business using AI drones in national parks, and from April 2025 onwards, they are also planning an air route attraction business aimed at attracting tourists from the Kansai region.
