Nippon Travel Agency (President: Akihiro Horisaka) compiled popular destinations and travel trends based on reservations for the New Year holiday period (domestic: accommodation from December 25, 2017 to January 4, 2018, overseas: departure from December 25, 2017 to January 3, 2018) on December 22nd. Okinawa ranked first in the ranking of popular domestic travel destinations, which saw a large increase in the number of travelers from the previous year, just as it did during the summer vacation period. Reservations for package plans of airfare, hotel, and rental car are booming, especially among families. In second place is Kansai, where gourmet trips such as crab from Northern Kinki, such as Kinosaki, and grouper from Southern Kii, such as Shirahama, are popular. Gourmet trips such as crab and winter yellowtail have also been attracting attention in the Hokuriku region in the past month, ranking third. Even when limited to destinations departing from and arriving in Western Japan, Okinawa ranked first compared to the previous year. In second place is Keihanshin, and in third place is Kansai, with a tendency for needs to polarize between long-distance and nearby destinations. In terms of growth rate in the past month, Hokuriku ranked first, just like the rest of the country. The Tokyo metropolitan area came in second. For overseas travel, Guam saw growth as the number of seats increased on charter flights, increasing by 1.7 times compared to the previous year. Vietnam, which came in second, attracted attention for its lantern festival, which is perfect for social media and became a buzzword this year. Following them, Thailand, Hong Kong, and Singapore all saw large increases compared to the previous year. In terms of number of travelers, Taiwan, which also topped the rankings for summer vacation, also took the top spot for the New Year holidays. Products that include sightseeing and meals are selling well. For overseas travel to and from Western Japan, Europe came in first compared to the previous year. Italy, Spain, and France are doing well, and Japan Travel analyzed that "Europe is recovering as the good performance continues in January to March." The top spot for number of travelers goes to Vietnam, where resort destinations in the central part of the country such as Da Nang and Hoi An are very popular.
