The Japan Tourism Agency has compiled a preliminary report on the total travel transaction figures for major travel agencies for fiscal year 2017 (April 2017 - March 2018). The total transaction amount increased 3.0% year-on-year to 5,708,473 million yen. The recovery of overseas travel led to the overall increase. The total transaction amount for domestic travel increased 0.4% year-on-year to 3,419,084 million yen. Of this, the transaction amount for travel product brands (recruitment-type package tours) was sluggish, down 1.4% to 1,624,320 million yen, and the number of transactions was sluggish, down 2.8% to 34,077,600. The total transaction amount for overseas travel increased 6.7% year-on-year to 2,653,600 million yen, showing a recovery trend from the slump that has continued in recent years throughout the year. The transaction amount for travel product brands increased 7.2% year-on-year to 431,524 million yen, and the number of transactions increased 4.2% year-on-year to 2,172,400 people. The total transaction amount for foreign travel increased by 12.1% to 224,083 million yen. The transaction amount for travel product brands increased by 3.8% to 8,065 million yen, and the number of people handled increased by 16.4% to 516,500 people. 33 of the 50 companies exceeded the previous fiscal year.
