According to travel trends for the New Year holiday period (domestic stays from December 25th to January 4th, 2019, overseas departures from December 25th to January 3rd, 2019) compiled by Nippon Travel Agency based on reservation status, Hokkaido topped the domestic rankings in popularity, and Spain topped the overseas rankings in popularity. The rankings were calculated by comparing the number of reservations and overnight stays with the previous year. Hokkaido, ranked first among prefectures for domestic travel, attracted 150% more overnight stays than the same period last year, thanks to the effects of the "Fukkouwari" discount campaign. In second place was Niigata Prefecture, which is holding a pre-DC in preparation for the Niigata-Shonai DC next year. Following that were Tokyo, Chiba, and Wakayama. In terms of the number of overnight stays, theme park resorts are still strong, with Chiba Prefecture in first place, Tokyo in second, and Osaka in third. Hokkaido in fourth place and Okinawa in fifth. Spain topped the rankings for overseas travel popularity. France also came in second, reflecting the recent popularity of Europe. Following that were Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam, with Asian countries showing strong popularity.
