On May 31, the Japan Tourism Agency announced the total (preliminary) figures for travel transactions by major travel agencies in fiscal 2023. The total transaction amount was 3,633,776 million yen, up 24.8% from fiscal 2022, and down 20.5% from fiscal 2019, before COVID-19. Domestic travel and foreign travel have recovered to close to pre-COVID levels. Domestic travel was down 1.5% from the previous year, and down 7.8% from fiscal 2019, to 2,355,931 million yen. Of this, the transaction amount for travel product brands (recruitment-type package tours) was down 21.9% from fiscal 2019 to 693,567 million yen, and the number of people handled was down 25.2% from fiscal 2019 to 19,509,900 people. Overseas travel was up 135.5% from the previous year, and down 40.3% from fiscal 2019 to 1,699,360 million yen. The transaction value of travel product brands was 97,379 million yen, down 74.8% from FY2019, and the number of customers was 300,700, down 80.7% from FY2019. Foreign tourists increased 215.5% from FY2019, but decreased 6.8% from FY2019 to 207,909 million yen. The transaction value of travel product brands was 1,827 million yen, down 60.5% from FY2019, and the number of customers was 88,400, down 79.6% from FY2019. The total transaction value of travel product brands was 792,773 million yen, up 20.5% from FY2019, but decreased 38.0% from FY2019. The number of customers was 19,899,000, up 3.4% from FY2019, but decreased 29.1% from FY2019. Seven of the 43 companies exceeded the number in FY2019.
