Hankyu Travel International recently compiled travel trends based on booking status for overseas and domestic trips for the summer vacation (departing July 15th - August 31st). As economic activity picks up after the COVID-19 pandemic, domestic travel demand is stronger than last year. Overseas travel is still recovering due to the prolonged weak yen, high oil prices, and high prices overseas, but it is showing a gradual upward trend of 10% increase compared to last year. Domestic travel is 1.3 times higher than last year, showing a significant increase from last year. The ranking of popular travel destinations is Hokuriku/Koshinetsu in first place, Hokkaido in second place, and Kinki in third place. In Hokuriku/Koshinetsu, it is 1.2 times higher than last year, with Kamikochi and the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route being popular. It is said that the number of "long-term stay" trips, where people stay for about a week at summer resorts, hot springs, ancient capitals, and remote islands across the country and travel as if they are living there, has increased by about 1.5 times. In addition, trips away from the heatwaves of the summer in urban areas and staying in cooler highland resorts such as Hakuba in Shinshu and Kushiro in Hokkaido are also gaining in popularity. Tours to enjoy summer festivals held in various places, including the Aomori Nebuta Festival and the four major summer festivals in Tohoku, are also doing well, increasing by 1.3 times, and there is also high demand for trips to watch fireworks, such as tours to watch the fireworks in Nagaoka and Omagari, up 10%. The peak departure date is July 21st, and there is a tendency for them to be concentrated in the first half of the summer vacation from late July to early August. Overseas travel is 1.1 times higher than last year. In the ranking of popular travel destinations, Asian countries occupy the top positions, with Europe in first place, Taiwan in second place, South Korea in third place, Thailand in fourth place, and Vietnam in fifth place. Italy is at the top of the European rankings, and round-trip trips with many attractions such as world heritage sites are popular. In terms of growth rate, Turkey has increased three times compared to last year, and Egypt has increased four times, and travel demand to countries that are relatively less affected by the weak yen and high fuel prices, like Asian countries, is increasing. The peak departure date is August 11th, with destinations with longer trips, mainly to Europe, concentrated in the second week of August.
