The Kyoto Prefecture Travel Association (Chairman: Oike Fumiyoshi) and its Youth Division (Director: Iwasaki Zenkei) recently organized a 4-night, 5-day overseas study trip to Vienna, Austria, with 15 participants. On the first day, the group boarded a Lufthansa flight from Kansai Airport to Vienna Airport via Frankfurt. It took 12 hours including transfers. It took about 40 minutes to get from the airport to the city center, and they stayed at the Savoyen Hotel, located very close to the Belvedere Palace. The next day, they visited the Vienna Opera House, the Sacher Hotel, the Cappuccino Church, the Teutonic Knights Church, St. Stephen's Cathedral, and Heroes' Square. On the third day, they toured five hotels, including the Hilton Vienna Plaza Hotel and the Hotel de France, and then went to see "The Sound of Music" at the Volksoper (Volks means citizens, and Opa means opera house). Before the show, they were able to see the machinery and props under the stage, which they would not normally be able to see. The play was in German, but English subtitles were available, so they enjoyed the show. On the fourth day, everyone had free time to enjoy the morning market and flea market, and on the morning of the fifth day, they returned to Kansai Airport from Vienna Airport, via Frankfurt, as they had done on the way there. The participants' impressions of this study trip were as follows: "We learned that although German is the official language of Austria, English is spoken at tourist spots, shops, and hotels," "The palace, opera house, national art gallery, museums, and churches are all majestic buildings and are definitely worth visiting," "Horse-drawn carriages run through the city center, which is very elegant," "There is a comprehensive system of trams, national railways, subways, and buses, so it is easy to get around," and "Shopping at supermarkets and markets is not much different from Japan. Alcohol was even cheap."
