According to the results of the Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA) travel market trend survey for September (July-September), the domestic travel economic activity index (DI) was minus 11, down 13 points from the previous period (January-March). Overseas travel rose 4 points to minus 16, and inbound travel fell 2 points to zero. The result shows a noticeable decline in domestic travel. The domestic travel DI fluctuates greatly depending on the industry, with general travel agencies dropping 33 points to minus 15 and domestic travel wholesalers rising 33 points to zero. By area, Hokkaido increased 13 points and Keihanshin increased 6 points, but most areas, including Kyushu and Kanto, which were hit by heavy rain disasters, saw large declines. Group travel is generally on a downward trend. Travel agencies said, "Demand is strong in Hokkaido and Kyushu in the summer, and there are many family trips," and "there is a tendency for travel to be concentrated in the fall." The domestic DI for the next period (October-December) is expected to rise 15 points to 4. Although overseas travel is still in the negative, it has recovered smoothly this month. By industry, overseas travel wholesalers are down 21 points, but have recovered 14 points from the previous quarter, while online travel agencies have fallen 84 points to minus 100. By destination, Europe and China have recovered, and Asia is the only region to be positive at 9. Taiwan and Hong Kong are said to be doing well. The outlook for the next DI has recovered 2 points to minus 14. For travel to Japan, online travel agencies are doing well, rising 74 points to 40. By destination, Hokkaido, Kinki, and Tokai are on the rise. Travel agencies are saying things like "experiential tourism is becoming more popular" and "there are many requests for new routes other than the Golden Route." The next DI has risen 3 points to 3. The survey is conducted quarterly. 310 companies, including JATA members, responded.
