The Japan Tourism Agency has compiled the total transaction amounts of major travel agencies for April, May, and June. In April, it increased 0.8% year-on-year to 404.521 billion yen, in May it increased 9.6% year-on-year to 470.528 billion yen, and in June it increased 4.8% year-on-year to 452.229 billion yen. Domestic travel recovered with the arrival of the spring travel season, and generally performed well. Overseas travel continued to perform well, increasing 0.2% year-on-year in April, 12.7% year-on-year in May, and 9.0% year-on-year in June. Europe showed a notable recovery, and Hawaii and Micronesia also performed well during Golden Week. Domestic travel increased 0.6% year-on-year in April, 7.5% year-on-year in May, and 2.8% year-on-year in June. Although it continued to decline last year, it showed a tendency to recover. This was largely due to a backlash from the impact of the Kumamoto earthquake the previous year. The number of foreign tourists increased by 8.0% in April and 19.2% in May, but in June the increase was 2.9% compared to the previous year, falling short of the previous year's figure. This was due to a backlash from the large MICE projects of the previous year. From April, the number of JTB Group companies listed among the 50 major travel agencies was changed from 15 to 25, and four companies were added: View Travel Service, STA Travel, Tech Air Service, and Nikko Travel.
