According to a report by the Japan Tourism Agency, total transaction amounts for major travel agencies in January were 376,289 million yen, up 3.2% from the same month last year. Domestic travel was down 0.3% to 218,259 million yen. Group tours were strong, but this was offset by the impact of people refraining from traveling due to the heavy snowfall in mid-January. Overseas travel was up 8.3% to 143,990 million yen, with strong performance from destinations such as Taiwan, Singapore, and Hong Kong. Travel by foreigners was up 10.5% to 14,039 million yen, with transactions from China and Thailand standing out. 32 of the 50 companies increased their figures from the same month last year.
