The Japan Tourism Agency has compiled a preliminary report on the total travel transaction figures for major travel agencies for fiscal year 2016 (April 2016 - March 2017). The total transaction amount was 5,565,680,000,000 yen, down 2.3% from the previous year. This was due to the year-on-year decline in domestic travel. The total transaction amount for domestic travel was lower than the same month of the previous year throughout the year, down 3.1% to 3,328,159,000,000 yen. Of this, the transaction amount for travel product brands (recruitment-type package tours) was sluggish, down 5.3% to 1,020,770,000,000 yen, and the number of people handled was down 7.2% to 33,996,800 people. The total transaction amount for overseas travel was 2,369,800,000, down 2.4%. Although it was a negative figure, it was up 6.1% from the same period of the previous year in the fourth quarter (January - March), and is gradually escaping the slump that has continued in recent years. The transaction amount of travel product brands was 607,632 million yen, down 6.4% year on year, and the number of people was 3,157,700, down 1.7% year on year. The total transaction amount of foreign travel was 200,541 million yen, up 14.0% year on year. The transaction amount of travel product brands was 7,056 million yen, the same as the previous year, and the number of people was 461,200, up 7.6% year on year. 13 out of 50 companies exceeded the previous year. ◇ The total transaction amount of major travel agencies in March was 520,666 million yen, up 3.8% year on year. Domestic travel was 305,078 million yen, down 0.7% year on year, but overseas travel jumped to 194,126 million yen, up 9.8% year on year. Foreign travel increased 22.5% year on year to 21,463 million yen. Of the 50 companies, 31 exceeded the same month last year.
