On September 12, Rakuten Travel announced the "Ranking of Hot Springs Most Popular with Seniors" based on the number of nights stayed by guests using the senior plans sold on the site. Following on from the previous year, Ureshino Onsen in Saga Prefecture won the rankings for the second consecutive year. First place Ureshino Onsen saw a 66.8% increase in nights stayed by guests aged 60 and over compared to the same period last year. Located in Ureshino City, which touts itself as "Japan's No. 1 Barrier-Free Town," efforts to make hot springs suitable for senior travel, such as making accommodations barrier-free, are underway, and this trend is starting to take hold. Second place went to Serigasawa Onsen in Nagano Prefecture, whose popular plans cater to the needs of seniors, such as setting prices according to the amount of food served. Third place was Yugawara Onsen in Kanagawa Prefecture, fourth place was Hida Takayama Onsen in Gifu Prefecture, and fifth place was Kaike Onsen in Tottori Prefecture. The rankings were compiled for stays by guests aged 60 and over from September 2016 to August 2017.
