According to a summary by the Japan Tourism Agency, the total transaction amount for major travel agencies in August was 598,034 million yen, up 2.2% from the same month last year. Capturing summer vacation demand, overseas travel and other travel were strong. Domestic travel was down 0.3% to 363,583 million yen. There was some variation between travel agencies, but it was roughly on par with the previous year. Overseas travel was up 6.7% to 219,332 million yen. Travel to Hawaii and other destinations was generally strong. Travel by foreigners was up 2.7% to 15,118 million yen. 21 of the 50 agencies exceeded the same month last year.
