On January 20th, JTB West Japan will begin selling scarves developed by rebranding "Tango Textiles," a specialty of the Tango region of Kyoto Prefecture. The scarves will be sold at JTB stores in Osaka City and at accommodation facilities in Tango. By teaming up with the local community, the company is breathing new life into traditional products and revitalizing the region. Tango has long been known as a producer of silk fabrics, and in 2020 the luxury fabric "Tango Chirimen" will celebrate its 300th anniversary, but production has dropped dramatically due to a decline in demand. The region is also struggling with depopulation. In an attempt to take advantage of this turning point for the local specialty and brand the region, the company, the Tango Regional Development Bureau of Kyoto Prefecture, and five local Tango textile companies launched the "Tango Textiles Shangri-La Project" in May 2017 and planned to commercialize the scarves. They were jointly developed by external experts such as buyers and overseas designers. The "Silk Shangri-La" was the theme for the rebranding of the region. The aim is to connect elements such as tourism and the history and techniques of textiles that are rooted in Tango, and to make the region a place that attracts people from all over the world. The idea is to revive the silk textile industry, develop new products, and bring vitality to the region by selling them not only locally but also in urban areas. The famous French designer Mathilde Brézion has been appointed to design the products, and a "product development team" has been formed to aim for the creation of products suited to the modern era. They have successfully developed a scarf that incorporates high-quality materials and techniques, and the story of the silk textiles that gave birth to Japan's kimono culture. Prices range from 18,000 to 57,000 yen. The scarves are available for sale at JTB Kansai Higashi Umeda branch, Yuhigaura Onsen Kashoen, Kashoen Hanare Kai, and Kizu Onsen Fukumatsu Cafe. Sales will run until March 25th.
