According to a recent report on travel trends for this year's summer vacation period compiled by the Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA, Chairman Hiromi Tagawa), the most popular domestic destination was Hokkaido again, and the most popular overseas destination was Taiwan. Domestic travel, based on the reservation status (person base, as of mid-June) of six major travel agencies, showed a sluggish 2.8% decrease in July, but increased 1.9% in August and 7.1% in September, and the activity picked up toward the latter half of the summer. By destination, Hokkaido was in first place, Okinawa in second place, and Tokyo in third place, unchanged from the previous year. Osaka followed in fourth place, and Kyushu in fifth place rose sharply from 14th place last year due to the effect of the historical drama "Saigo Don." In other areas, Koshinetsu is increasing its presence as a summer resort. For overseas travel, based on the reservation status of seven major travel agencies (same source), July was up 0.3% year on year, August was down 8.0% year on year, and September was down 5.2% year on year. Growth is slowing compared to the previous year. Taiwan, ranked first, is popular as a nearby travel destination and a girls' trip destination. Hawaii, which dropped to second place, also boasts a popularity as a standard destination. South Korea has suddenly recovered and moved up in third place, while Singapore, ranked fourth and fifth, continues to perform well as a family resort. The survey was conducted by questionnaire to sales, planning and counter staff of 229 JATA member companies.
